What makes you happy?

For those times when you're feeling stressed out, overwhelmed, or just "blah," it helps to have a Happy List. It's a list of things you can do to take a break, lift your spirits, and remind yourself that you are special.

Why have a Happy List? Because when you're at a low point, even though you'll know you need to do something to "pick yourself up," you will have a hard time thinking of what that "something" might be. When you have your Happy List at the ready, you have an array of ideas to call upon when you need them.

Make a list of things that make you happy. One idea someone shared with me recently was to have a lovely breakfast: juice in a pretty glass, a nice placemat and fancy napkin, a flower in a vase, and a nicely prepared morning meal. I feel more relaxed and cheerful just thinking about that! I'm sure you can think of many more ideas for your own personal Happy List.

Try to think of a variety of things, so you'll have something to fit whatever situation or mood you happen to be in. Your Happy List should include things that can be done:

    · in small moments
    · in a bigger block of time
    · with your children
    · in the company of your spouse, friends, or family
    · on your own
    · outdoors
    · indoors
    · at home
    · away from home
    · when you're in an active mood
    · when you're in the mood for peace, quiet, and/or stillness
    · … and anything else you can think of!

Write your list on a piece of nice paper and place it somewhere where you can find it easily. Over time, you may think of more things to add. Next time you need cheering up, you'll know you can turn to your Happy List!

Bonus: You can help your children make a happy list, too!
